What Will The Scheduled 2012 Medicare Reimbursement Cuts Mean to Your Practice?

Friday, November 11, 2011

An insightful commentary on physicianspractice.com (written by Lucien Roberts) explains exactly what will happen to physician pay in 2012 when the scheduled 29.5% cut to the Medicare's reimbursement takes place. The math is startling.

Assume that in 2011 a physician made $1,000,000 on a gross basis. After subtracting expenses of $600,000 the doctors net income would have been $400,000. Now look at what happens when the 29.5% cut is implemented in 2012. The doctor would make a gross income of $705,000. If he is lucky, the doctor's expenses would remain $600,000 which means the net income ($705,000 less $600,000) totals $105,000 or a 73.8% reduction in his income.

When our profession is under attack - as it surely is - it will be our patients who ultimately bear the consequences of poor public policy. This is why Docs4PatientCare is working so hard to represent physicians and our patients.
