Feds OK Deep Cuts to California's Medicaid Program, Threatening Access to Care

Monday, November 07, 2011

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the federal government has approved a proposal by the State of California that will allow the state to impose dramatic cuts to the reimbursement rate paid to health care providers. The Times reports: "California plans to reduce rates by 10% to many providers, including physicians, dentists, clinics, pharmacies and most nursing homes, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced Thursday."

The impact of these cuts will hit patients the hardest. Physicians groups and patient advocacy groups have noted that these cuts will make it harder for many of California's Medicaid patients to receive healthcare because California's doctors would no longer see these patients.

Ironically, the foundation of ObamaCare is built on an expansion of Medicaid. California's need to cut Medicaid spending proves what critics of ObamaCare have been saying all along - that the states that are struggling today to pay for Medicaid will never be able to bear the burden of increased Medicaid obligations imposed on them by ObamaCare.

This story also highlights that Docs4PatientsCare's proposal to give patient's more control over their health care is the solution to America's healthcare problems. Deep spending cuts will reduce access to care for the poor and disabled, however, if patients were given the power to decide how to spend their healthcare dollars through HSAs and other innovative solutions, patients would be able to get the care they need at an affordable price.
